In a move that has generated some buzz in the baseball community, the Philadelphia Phillies have struck a minor league agreement with left-handed reliever Génesis Cabrera. Although this deal was initially reported by Mike Rodriguez last month, it only appeared on MiLB.com’s transaction log this week. Alongside Cabrera, the Phillies have also welcomed right-handed pitchers Trevor Richards and Jonathan Hernández, infielder Christian Cairo, and catcher René Pinto to their roster in recent weeks.
Cabrera is expected to play a significant role early in the season, given his extensive experience in Major League Baseball over the past seven years. Last season was particularly challenging for him, as he donned the uniforms of four different teams and ended up with a disappointing 6.54 ERA across 40 appearances. His strikeout rate has been lackluster for two consecutive seasons, and he has struggled with giving up home runs, a critical issue that has arisen in his game.
At 29 years old, Cabrera typically throws his sinker and four-seam fastball in the 95-96 MPH range. While this speed is a decrease from the 97-98 MPH he was clocked at while successfully pitching in high-pressure situations with the Cardinals earlier in his career, it still qualifies as above-average for a lefty pitcher. Additionally, he has previously found success with his cutter and curveball. This signing helps restore the team’s left-handed relief depth following the trade of Matt Strahm. However, Cabrera currently ranks as the third option behind José Alvarado and Tanner Banks on the organizational depth chart. The Phillies also have Kyle Backhus, known for his ground ball tendencies, on their 40-man roster.
Trevor Richards, who will turn 33 in May, had a limited presence last year, appearing in just five games with the Royals and Diamondbacks. Known for his changeup, Richards has participated in parts of eight seasons, consistently reaching over 60 innings pitched from 2021 to 2024. He finished last season with a 5.19 ERA but showcased solid strikeout and walk ratios across three Triple-A teams. He will be vying for a versatile pitching role during Spring Training.
Jonathan Hernández started his career as a reliable high-leverage arm with the Texas Rangers but faced difficulties during the 2023-24 seasons. After signing a minor league contract with Tampa Bay last winter, he spent most of the season sidelined due to injury, making only 12 appearances at the Triple-A level, where he allowed three runs over 12 innings. His fastball averaged 95.3 MPH, a notable drop compared to his earlier seasons in Texas.
Catcher René Pinto brings veteran experience to the Phillies, having posted a batting line of .231/.263/.404 over 83 games with the Rays from 2022 to 2024. Last season, he spent time in the minors, striking out at a rate of 31% while hitting .259/.309/.498 in 64 games for affiliated teams in Arizona and Toronto. On the other hand, infielder Christian Cairo, a defensively skilled utility player, was selected by the Braves in the Rule 5 draft last offseason but didn’t make the team and was returned to the Guardians in Spring Training. He managed a batting average of .237/.338/.331 across 416 plate appearances in Triple-A and is still pursuing his opportunity to debut in the majors.
