The Sunday Times Tax List Unveils Northern Ireland's Top Taxpayers
The latest edition of The Sunday Times Tax List reveals the UK's 100 highest taxpayers, with a combined tax contribution of over £5.758 billion. Among them, Northern Ireland's top taxpayers are William Barnett and his family, who work in food distribution and paid a substantial £23 million in taxes. This family's diverse interests include grain, animal feed, packaging, oils, and molasses.
In second place for the region is Harold Montgomery and his family, operating in the transport sector. They secured the 96th spot on the UK-wide list, contributing £11.8 million in taxes. Montgomery's logistics group employs over 2,000 people in Co Antrim.
The list showcases a diverse range of industries, from high finance and music to sports and entrepreneurship. Notable names include Fred and Peter Done, the founders of Betfred, who top the rankings with an estimated tax contribution of £400.1 million. Former One Direction star Harry Styles makes his debut at number 54, paying £24.7 million in taxes.
Two footballers, Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah, also appear on the list, with estimated tax payments of £16.9 million and £14.5 million, respectively. The list features household names like JK Rowling, Ed Sheeran, and Anthony Joshua, who collectively contribute significant tax amounts.
Robert Watts, the compiler of the list, highlights the diverse nature of the taxpayers, ranging from aristocrats to business owners and Premier League footballers. He notes a significant jump in tax contributions, largely due to higher corporation tax rates. Interestingly, one in nine individuals on the list are non-residents, choosing to live in tax-friendly locations like Monaco, Dubai, and the Channel Islands.
Despite the high tax contributions, Watts expresses concern about the potential impact of the super-rich's offshore exodus on public finances. The full list is available for public viewing, offering a fascinating insight into the UK's tax landscape.
