Marcus Freeman: Maybe I'll pursue NFL coaching someday, but now I'm focused on Notre Dame - NBC Sports
Marcus Freeman's name has been in the spotlight for several coaching positions this year. Despite being a top contender for the Giants job, he has consistently affirmed his commitment to his current role as head coach at Notre Dame.
During a press conference on Wednesday, Freeman addressed the NFL rumors that have been circulating this offseason, viewing them as beneficial.
"I'm the head coach at Notre Dame," Freeman stated. "I've emphasized that individual recognition, NFL interest, and personal success are all indicators of our team's achievements and the program's standing. I've used these NFL interactions to gain insights from GMs and front-office executives, learning about their perspectives on successful coaching."
Freeman's mindset is clear: he doesn't control the external noise, but he focuses on his internal goals. He doesn't feel the need to make public statements every time a job opportunity arises, as he believes the future is uncertain. Instead, he finds value in addressing these rumors annually, as it signifies the program's success.
"I hope we address this every year," he said. "It means we're achieving success at Notre Dame. If we didn't have to discuss this, it would indicate more significant issues within our football program."
Freeman, 39, has an impressive 43-12 record in his four seasons with the Fighting Irish, replacing Brian Kelly. Despite the rumors, he remains dedicated to his current role, stating, "I don't love wasting time thinking about things that aren't right in front of me."
When asked about his future aspirations, Freeman acknowledged his lack of experience in NFL coaching. "Do I want to be an NFL head coach? I've never done it, and I don't know enough about it," he said. "Perhaps someday, if the timing is right and it aligns with my goals, I might consider it."
Freeman's current focus is on his role at Notre Dame, where he is determined to be the best head coach he can be.
