Get ready for an emotional rollercoaster as we dive into the story of two footballing talents, Adam Phillips and Vimal Yoganathan, who are set to face their former club, Liverpool, in a highly anticipated match at Anfield.
For these two Barnsley midfielders, the upcoming fixture holds a special significance. Both Phillips and Yoganathan grew up as Liverpool supporters and spent years in the club's academy, with Yoganathan even spending seven years on Merseyside. Their release from the academy didn't dampen their love for the club, and now, they have the chance to return to their spiritual home as opponents.
Phillips, 27, recalls the moment he learned of the draw, saying, "I was buzzing! I ran upstairs screaming at my partner. I'm still a massive Liverpool fan, and I can't believe we're playing them." He reminisces about being at the historic 4-0 Champions League win against Barcelona in 2019 and his regular visits to Anfield whenever Liverpool are playing.
But here's where it gets controversial... Phillips has a bone to pick with one of his former schoolmates, Curtis Jones. "I went to the same school as Curtis, but he's a bit younger. I'd love to get his shirt, or maybe Van Dijk's. But Curtis unfollowed me on Instagram, so he must think he's too good for me now." Phillips jokes that he'll have to "have a word" with Curtis on the pitch.
For Yoganathan, the match offers a unique opportunity to add Anfield to his list of iconic football grounds, which already includes Old Trafford and Wembley. The 20-year-old, who turns a year older the day after the match, has had an incredible journey. He joined Liverpool's academy at the age of eight, with then-manager Brendan Rodgers even being present on the day of his signing. Yoganathan's family is from Sri Lanka, and he grew up in a small village in North Wales, making his story all the more inspiring.
"I never thought I'd be able to showcase to people that a Tamil player can make it in professional football. It's a bit mad, but I'm happy to show that it's possible," Yoganathan tells us.
And this is the part most people miss... Barnsley has a rich history of causing upsets against top clubs. In fact, they've won their last two visits to Anfield, with their last defeat there dating back to 1959. So, while Liverpool is expected to field a strong side, the omens are good for Barnsley, and the players are already discussing which Liverpool shirts they want to swap for after the match.
"We've had some chat about it. I'd love to get Huge Ekitike's shirt, and of course, Van Dijk's would be amazing. But I'll be happy with anyone's shirt," Yoganathan says.
As for the match itself, both players are determined to give it their all. "We're aiming for a win," Yoganathan states confidently. "We'll give it our best shot and see what happens," Phillips adds. "You have to believe to achieve."
So, will Barnsley be able to upset their old club? Only time will tell. But one thing's for sure: this match holds a special meaning for these two players, and their story is a testament to the beauty of football and the dreams it inspires.
