A bold move by the Traditional Medicine Practice Council (TMPC) has sparked a conversation about the importance of regulation in the alternative medicine industry. The TMPC has taken a stand, shutting down Nana Boakye Herbal Centre and imposing sanctions on several other facilities in Tema Metropolis.
But here's where it gets controversial... The council's actions were prompted by a regulatory enforcement exercise, revealing some shocking breaches. It seems that Nana Boakye Herbal Centre had been operating with an expired license for a whopping eight years! And that's not all; they also employed two unregistered workers, a clear violation of the Traditional Medicine Practice Act, 2000 (Act 575).
However, not all facilities were found to be non-compliant. Oduma Herbal Boutique and Ancient Herbal, though initially flagged for employing unregistered staff and operating with an expired license, respectively, were allowed to reopen after taking immediate corrective actions. The team also inspected Mallam Abdullah, That Day Herbal, and MH Organic Shop, all of which passed with flying colors, fully compliant with licensing and registration requirements.
Mr. Michael Lawson, the Head of Compliance, Inspection, and Enforcement, addressed the media, explaining the council's actions. He emphasized that enforcement measures are not meant to be punitive but rather to uphold standards and build public trust in traditional and alternative medicine practices.
"It's about protecting the public's health and ensuring that practitioners meet the necessary licensing and professional standards," he said.
Mr. Lawson urged all practitioners to ensure their facilities are properly licensed and that all staff are duly registered. He assured the public that the council will continue with regular inspections to keep a check on unregulated practices.
He further appealed to the public to be vigilant and only patronize licensed facilities. "If you suspect any illegal operations, please report them to the council," he added.
And this is the part most people miss... The council's efforts are part of a broader initiative to safeguard public health. By conducting similar enforcement exercises across other metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies in the coming weeks, they aim to create a safer and more regulated environment for traditional and alternative medicine practices.
