A sleeping giant may be awakening, and the consequences could be catastrophic. Scientists are on high alert as they monitor a notorious volcano, El Chichón, which has exhibited unsettling signs of activity, raising concerns about a potential eruption.
The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) has detected a series of worrying indicators at El Chichón, a volcano in Chiapas, Mexico, which was thought to be dormant. In the latter half of 2025, rising temperatures, bubbling gases, and unusual sulfur formations were observed, prompting increased scrutiny. El Chichón has a deadly history. Its eruption in 1982 resulted in the destruction of nine villages and the tragic loss of over 1,900 lives. Since the 1982 disaster, only the Nevado del Ruiz eruption in Colombia in 1985, which claimed 23,000 lives, has been more devastating. Dr. Patricia Jácome Paz from the Institute of Geophysics, part of the UNAM team, believes the current activity warrants close attention due to this historical context.
However, Dr. Paz reassures that the current activity is likely hydrothermal and confined to the crater, reducing the likelihood of a fatal eruption. She explains that the observed behavior aligns with minor steam-driven explosions or hydrothermal processes. As of now, there is no indication of fresh magma rising, which diminishes the chances of a large-scale eruption similar to the 1982 event.
But the situation remains precarious. Dr. Paz warns that the crater is no longer safe for exploration due to the unstable ground, high temperatures, and the presence of gases. The local Chiapas Civil Protection Secretariat is taking precautions, keeping communities and tour guides informed and enforcing safety measures.
UNAM's report highlights the potential for a highly explosive eruption if El Chichón awakens again. It could be a Plinian-type event, characterized by the forceful discharge of enormous, high-temperature plumes of gas, ash, and pumice into the stratosphere. The gas and ash column could soar to heights of 20-30 kilometers.
