Here’s a bombshell that’s bound to shake the political landscape: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has leveled explosive allegations against Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, claiming he and his wife, Elizabeth Colburn Gogoi, have deep connections with Pakistani agent Ali Tauqeer Sheikh. Sarma revealed that Sheikh, notorious for peddling anti-India propaganda globally, made a staggering 12 trips to India between 2010 and 2013—all during the Congress-led UPA government’s tenure. Coincidence? Sarma thinks not. He argues this frequent travel raises serious questions about Sheikh’s motives and the role of the then-government in allowing such visits.
And this is the part most people miss—when Assam formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe Sheikh’s alleged anti-India conspiracy, Sheikh abruptly deleted all his tweets. Why? Sarma suggests it was to shield someone. He pointed out that Sheikh often tagged Elizabeth in his posts, implying a close relationship. Why would a Pakistani national worry about an Assam Police investigation unless there’s something—or someone—to protect?
Sarma didn’t stop there. He highlighted Elizabeth’s year-long stint in Pakistan (March 2011 to March 2012) and her family’s alleged ties to Sheikh. He also claimed she traveled to Islamabad six times while working for an Indian firm and made three more trips after joining an NGO. Interestingly, she always entered Pakistan via the Attari border, never by air—a move Sarma believes was to maintain a low profile.
Here’s where it gets even more unsettling: Sarma accused Elizabeth of gathering sensitive information about India and sharing it with Sheikh. He also alleged that Gaurav Gogoi failed to disclose his wife’s Pakistani bank account in his election affidavit—a potentially major oversight or deliberate omission. Is this a case of negligence, or something more sinister?
Sarma’s claims don’t end with Elizabeth. He alleged Gaurav himself visited Islamabad and Karachi in 2013, despite his visa being restricted to Lahore. The Assam Police were reportedly kept in the dark about this trip. What’s more, Gaurav was ‘digitally silent’ during his 10-day stay in Pakistan. Was he there for training, as Sarma suspects?
