Ashes 2024/25 Review: England's 'Textbook' Collapse & Aussie Dominance (2026)

The recent conclusion of the 2024/25 Ashes series has sparked significant discussions, particularly among cricket enthusiasts and analysts alike. Former Australian Test opener Marcus Harris expressed his disappointment regarding the series, which did not live up to the high expectations that fans had anticipated.

With two of the matches ending within just two days and the outcome being determined as early as the third Test, the Ashes series fell short of delivering the thrilling competition that is typically associated with such a prestigious rivalry. Despite Australia emerging victorious, Harris felt that England's struggles to keep pace dampened the excitement usually felt during these encounters.

"I came away from it feeling a bit let down that it wasn’t more competitive," Harris shared during an interview on SEN Mornings. "I genuinely believed England would put up a strong fight. Especially when key Australian players like Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, and Nathan Lyon were sidelined, and ‘Smithy’ missed a Test, I thought the contest would be tighter.

"While those two-day Tests can be quite thrilling to watch, they didn’t resonate with me. The matches in Sydney and Adelaide were good, but overall, I left feeling that it wasn’t the highest quality cricket I’ve enjoyed."

Interestingly, England's aggressive 'BazBall' strategy failed to make a significant impact on their performance. However, Harris noted that this approach influenced the way Australia played in response.

"I think we got somewhat pulled into their style of play," he commented. "You can get overwhelmed by it. There was considerable discussion around the Perth wicket; pundits suggested it was a decent pitch, but the players’ performances told a different story.

"Having played there myself, I know it can be a tricky surface. On Day 1, the very first ball after lunch can barely reach the batsman. In today’s game, modern batsmen feel the need to take control if they sense any threat, thinking, ‘I’m going to attack before you can.’ When everyone adopts this mindset, the pace of the game accelerates dramatically, often finishing shortly after tea on the second day. I found it somewhat disheartening to witness.

"Of course, it’s easy to critique from the sidelines, and I acknowledge that the mental challenges of Test cricket are immense when you're in the thick of it. But as a spectator, it felt like a bit of a letdown."

Following the series, many have raised questions about player selections, coaching strategies, and gameplay tactics. However, former Australian Test wicketkeeper Ian Healy attributed England's issues to inadequate preparation.

"They showcased textbook characteristics of an underprepared team," Healy stated during an interview on SEN Afternoons. "Their strategy was incredibly naive. They received advice about their preparations but chose to ignore it. They dismissed their legends as merely ‘has-beens,’ and when faced with critical moments early in the series, they faltered due to lack of match experience!

"This was exactly what I expected. By the time Tests three or four rolled around, they appeared ready to compete. They needed those couple of games before the first Test to be able to handle the crucial moments effectively.

"Why didn’t they recognize this? Why didn’t they heed the warnings? Their preparation was abysmal. Over the last four decades, they've only won twice, and during both instances, they prepared for a month ahead of time, engaging in matches and training, even if it meant losing many of those games before ultimately clinching the Test series!"
